Investigators concluded that the cause of fire was a trash bag filled with rags, which were used to wipe down wood-faced walls using an oily product.
A fire on the 2nd floor caused damage of about $150,000 to both a restaurant in downtown and its neighbor below.
Matt Gloeckner is the Battalion chief of Santa Rosa Fire Department. He has announced that Thai House Restaurant and Belly Left Coast, which was where the fire began, will both be closed for an indefinite period starting on Wednesday.
About 12:40 am on Wednesday, a 911 call was made reporting a potential water leak in the 500 Block of Fourth Street and a fire alarm.
In just four minutes, a crew was on the scene and discovered water leaking from the second and first floors of a brick two-story commercial building.
The smoke stained the windows on the second floor and an alarm went off.
Firefighters located the fire on the second floor of an old building, inside a Thai House Restaurant dining room that had been closed off. A sprinkler prevented flames spreading to other businesses.
As they put out the fire, firefighters discovered that water was pouring in from above the Belly Left Coast.
At the time of the incident, neither business was open and there were no reported injuries.
Investigators believe that the fire started when rags were used to wipe down wood facing walls using an oil-based product, and then placed in a garbage bag.
The rags ignited and the flames quickly spread onto seating cushions, according to Paul Lowenthal.
Garth Rollin is the owner of Belly Left Coast and he’s currently in Maui, feeding survivors from wildfires which have claimed 106 lives.
