A home in Dayton, Ohio that had been on fire just a few months ago was engulfed by flames Thursday morning.
Dayton police and firefighters were called to the 800 block Dow Street at 5:06 am on reports that a fire had broken out.
Xavier Hershovitz, a reporter for News Center 7, was at the house when he saw the flames shooting through the roof. He arrived shortly before 5:30 a.m. It was reported as breaking news by News Center 7 Daybreak.
Hershovitz was informed by Dayton District fire chief Nick Judge that homeless people were known to frequent this home.
Judge said, “This was an area where it had been reported that homeless people slept. We made a big push to get inside and search as much of the house before our men became too tired to continue.” We were able get teams inside to search the basement and first floor, both of which were free before the roof collapsed and we were forced to remove everyone.
According to him, just because some houses are empty does not necessarily mean that they are empty.
Judge said to Hershovitz, “People try to escape the cold and the weather.” We take more risks than usual to ensure that one of our guys is in. This makes the job more difficult for our men.
He said that many of the vacant houses could be occupied by people.
The same firefighters responded to a fire at the exact location last month.
News Center 7 reported on the fact that one patient found in the home was transported to hospital by medics.
Judge stated Thursday morning that empty homes pose a great danger to firefighters.
You have fire damage from the past. He explained that there were holes in the wall. We can’t even see it. This becomes a big problem for us.”
According to Judge, an emergency demolition could be carried out later today. The crews are checking to make sure that no one was inside at the time the house caught fire.
There was no injury.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of this fire.
