The landslide happened at night, and nobody was hurt. They want the promised urbanization two years and half ago

Residents of San Cristobal’s number 23 got quite a shock on Monday morning when they discovered that the entire roof of their porch, which connects with another portal, had collapsed. The bricks fell at night, when nobody was around. Otherwise, an accident could have happened. Residents are urging the city to carry out the promised urbanization as quickly as possible, given the deteriorating situation.

In the past decade, the neighborhood underwent a major transformation with the renovation of the public areas and regeneration of the housing blocks. The two actions are closely linked thanks to the cooperation of the local, regional, and state governments as well as residents via the ARU figure (urban regeneration areas).

Two years ago the third phase, which consisted of six blocks, 125 houses and nine stores, was completed. However, the urbanization will impact the streets and green spaces, as well as the arcades where some stores and municipal services are located, along with the access to homes. Work was supposed to be completed by May 2023, with ARU funding, but the time caught up, and work hasn’t even begun. This has caused anger in surrounding neighborhoods. Herrero Temino was awarded the contract by the previous government team, but construction management wasn’t completed. The City Council was forced to ask for an extension until October. However, this deadline could not be met and the Board of Directors were about to lose 600,000. Intermediation by the new government team (PP and Vox), before the regional administration, has resulted in a new extension.

This action will cost around 1.3m, with the ARU contributing 300k and the municipality the remaining. The project is expected to take eight months. In reality, the asphalt in this region is literally beaten by time, lack of maintenance and the numerous steps that make it an architectural barrier to people with disabilities. The deteriorating condition of the buildings is another factor. The 36 municipal buildings are mostly empty. Some have been transferred after competition to other associations. The buildings have also been damaged by vandals and broken glass. The roofs beneath them are also damp, and gutters have been broken. Also the passageways connecting one building with another are damaged.

Meetings have been held to renovate facades and remove architectural barriers in five neighborhood communities that are part of the fourth phase, however, the management body made up by the City Council and neighbors has yet to be established. Manuel Manso and Cristina Ayala of the Councilor for Urban Planning held their first meeting to discuss the final phase in the housing project, to be promoted over the course of next year, as well as the urbanization.

The regeneration of this neighbourhood, which began in 2015, would be complete with these blocks and urbanization in the inner area.
