The family’s three beloved dogs, Bailey, Max and Alfie, died in a house fire on Friday, leaving them heartbroken.
In a horrific house fire, three adored dogs of a Glasgow family lost their lives.
As Gillian Wilson was on holiday in Benidorm last Friday, August 11, she received a horrifying phone call. Her father’s Penilee home had been destroyed by fire.
The nurse’s three beloved pets Bailey, 13-15, Max, 10, and Alfie, 4, were being cared for at the house on Kinsail Drive.
Two of the dogs were saved by emergency services at around 4.50pm, but the eldest, Bailey, died in the home’s bath.
A few days later, Max and Alfie succumbed to their injuries despite the best efforts of vets.
“I was in Benidorm when all this happened,” Gillian told Glasgow Live.
“My dad’s neighbour called to say his house was on fire. At that time, she didn’t know the dogs were inside.
In that moment, my worst nightmare began. Since I was abroad, I didn’t know anything about what was happening.
I went home on the Saturday and saw two of my dogs who survived, they were both in bad shape. I took my dad to the hospital with burns after he tried to get into the house to save the dogs.
He also ran into the house to get my dad, so my dad has severe burns and scarring on his face.
Now we don’t have any dogs since the two dogs who survived took a turn for the worse.”
Since Gillian and her daughter adopted the dogs, they have been a huge part of their lives.
The 43-year-old will miss each of them dearly.
Gillian added: “They were all rescue dogs.”.
He was the eldest and was just so calm and tolerant. At the beginning, he was quite nervous because he came from a bad home.
When he was afraid, Bailey would go to the bath to feel safe. He would do this whenever fireworks or anything else scared him.
He was such a gentle and loving dog.
Some people say dogs don’t like cuddles, but I disagree. Max was absolutely nuts.
“Max loved being cuddled like a baby. He would always howl at my phone. If he heard the water running, he would run into the shower.”
“Alfie was the cheeky one who destroyed everything he saw.”
It has now been turned upside down for the family.
In addition to losing their beloved pets, Gillian’s dad has now lost his home and most of his belongings after the inferno.
After the traumatic experience, he has moved in with his daughter.
As the nurse explained, “the entire house has been written off. I saw the house for the first time recently, and it was shocking.”.
The downstairs is completely destroyed, and the upstairs is mostly damaged by smoke, but everything needs to be removed.
It was too late to save anything. The window and door of the kitchen blew off. All my dad had left were his clothes.
The loss of both the house and the dogs has left him pretty devastated.”
Due to the care provided to Alfie and Max, the family has been slapped with a five-figure vets bill.
As a result of the destructive fire, the 43-year-old is also trying to help her father get back on his feet.
In spite of this, the Penilee community has rallied around to support the family. A crowdfunder, which was launched on Sunday, has almost reached £2,500 and is about to reach its £3,000 goal.
The amount of help that people are willing to provide has completely blown Gillian away.
“I am in total awe of the community,” she said.
The support has been incredible. I receive messages all the time from strangers offering their help.”
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a dwelling fire at Kinsail Drive in Glasgow at 4.48pm on Friday, August 11.
At first, two appliances were mobilized to the scene by Operations Control, and then three appliances were mobilized.
In the kitchen area of the property, firefighters extinguished a well-alight fire and rescued three dogs.
