The Tesla Science Center in Shoreham was damaged by fire last week. To repair the damage, an emergency fundraising drive of $3 million has been launched.
It is also home to Nikola Tesla’s last laboratory, which includes the motor for alternating-current (AC) electric power. The power grid is based on AC electricity, and this has allowed the development of robotics, wi-fi technology, radio, and remote controls.
Stanford White designed the complex of buildings, which is listed in the National Historic Register. It sits on 16.5 acres. The fire started there on Tuesday afternoon, November 21, right before Thanksgiving weekend. The fire was extinguished by the morning after it started. More than 100 local firefighters and ambulance corps personnel responded.
Arson is not suspected, but the cause of fire will be investigated. Engineers and local officials have begun assessing all the damage caused by the fire. The organization reports that the fire has primarily affected the north side of the building. This includes partial destruction of roofs, chimneys, and cupolas. Water damage caused by firefighting is currently a major short-term threat.
According to the center, the fundraising campaign on Indiegogo, called “Mission Rebuild”, aims to raise “urgently needed” funds in order to dry and seal the roof before the winter season.
Marc Alessi said that everyone associated with the Tesla Science Center is indebted to these heroic first responders. “We are all grateful for their courage and dedication,” he wrote. We are grateful to our local firemen for their commitment and courage.
The center’s engineer on site, the historical architect of the lab, an engineering firm and several local agencies are all assessing the damage. They will be able to determine how the fire has affected restoration plans.
The Tesla Lab was scheduled to undergo a restoration project worth $20 million. The construction project has been delayed due to the fire. Experts are assessing the short-term requirements, such as repairs of the walls and roof, in order to preserve the structural integrity of the building. The center still aims to maintain as much as the original lab as possible despite losing a part in the fire. Alessi stated that “while we were ready to start a major renovation and restoration project at this time, the construction has not begun, saving us additional complications.”
Alessi was relieved that the structure of the 1901 building had largely resisted the effects of the fire.
