No injuries have been reported after a fire destroyed a strip mall awning in Whiteland on Wednesday morning.
Around 7 am, a wooden overhang and a glass section caught fire in the vicinity of Studio 31 Salon. This is located adjacent to Marathon Gas Station, northeast of U.S. 31 at Whiteland Road. Whiteland fire chief Eric Funkhouser stated that the business was closed at the time of the fire and there was no one inside.
Funkhouser stated that the cause of the fire is still unknown, but it seems an outside light caught fire on the building. Greenwood, Whiteland and Franklin firefighters were able extinguish flames in less than 15 minutes. He said that the White River, Franklin and Bargersville fire departments responded as well to ensure containment of the fire.
Funkhouser explained that in order to put out the fire the firefighters used a chainsaw to cut the awning.
Smoke was pushed into the building by glass covering the (wooden) awning. He said that there was no one in the building this morning. “I’m guessing it must have been a passerby who called in”, he added.
He said that there was no damage to the interior of the building and the firefighters had given the green light for the business opening at 8 am.
