It is an enormous lack of respect towards other peoples’ things. “It isn’t worth it to clean them, because they come back with impunity”, lament merchants and neighbors.

The majority of these are unintelligible scribbles and signatures on a commercial street relevant to Gijon. A street that looks like “a suburb of New York” leads to the city center. Graffiti is a common occurrence in all parts of the city. But in San Bernardo Street, between Casimiro Velasco Plaza del Parchis and Casimiro Velasco it has been particularly prevalent in recent weeks. This is a section where historic companies such as Industrial Bookstores, Curtiplas Junco Pandiaz Las Palmas Sonido Tommy Musical, Gestion Inmobiliaria, Hurle and Junco meet. Many of these businesses have been in business for more than 50 years. Libreria Industrial is a far superior institution: it turns 75 next year, on December 13.

Graffiti is done on shutters, shopfronts, and facades. There are also graffiti on doors and fences in abandoned basements. These are numerous despite there being several historical ones along the street. San Bernardo Street is not just awash with misunderstood artwork, but also advertising posters sprayed on the abandoned facades. Even posters from Podemos’s 2019 election campaign are on display.

Belen Suarez from Industrial Bookstore says, “I have a signature that has been on my blinds for several months. I don’t want to take it off because I know they will do it in just a few more days.” In recent weeks, we have been forced to remove multiple signatures on the doors. Maria Garcia from Gestion Inmobiliaria Hurle laments, “The image that they portray is inacceptable.” There is nothing that merchants can or should do. They say that they are “powerless” because of their actions.

Pandiaz’s owner is no stranger to vandalism. It looks like an outpost of New York. Margarita Diaz criticizes, “It is not understandable that they don’t do anything to stop these people.” Pedro Sierra from Sonido Las Palmas is being forced to alter the sign of his San Bernardo-based business. He reprimands: “Street business is already punished without these kinds of issues.”

Since years, businesses and neighbors have demanded greater police control of this vandalism. In these pages were the latest measures announced following an invasion similar to that in Cimavilla. It was reported that the previous team of government had discussed the idea of a ‘plan anti-graffiti’, but at the time of its mandate no information about this document or any possible ways to prevent it were available. Ana Gonzalez, a socialist councilor admitted that graffiti was difficult to manage. In the same campaign, the PP led by vice mayor Angela Pumariega promised to start an “anti graffiti patrol” with Emulsa employees on the daily and weekend schedules. Rodrigo Pintueles is not only an Environment Councilor but also the president of Emulsa. He could be relied upon to keep the election promise.
