Fire destroyed an off-grid, partially built home of a male between Kingston & Poulsbo. It is believed that the fire started overnight in a nearby chimney.
On Sept. 4, at 1250 hours, firemen were dispatched to Dawn Breaker Drive in response to an emergency call made by a neighbour who had described flames and smoke visible from the trees. Dawn Breaker Drive connects homes located in the deep forest between Port Gamble Road (the main road) and Miller Bay Road.
The North Kitsap Fire & Rescue Suquamish unit’s first engine arrived in less than 10 minutes at the site, which was difficult to reach down a steep road.
There was significant fire damage on the man’s jeep, parked only 10 feet behind the house. And flames spread through the trees. No fire hydrants were available, so firefighters used both the tanks of their engines as well as tender trucks to put out the flames.
Units of Poulsbo and Central Kitsap returned then to their stations. NKF&R Crews dug through debris and spent several hours to be sure all hotspots were put out.
He told the police that the fire began in the woodstove at the residence earlier in evening. Later, the man saw flames coming from through a rooflight. He evacuated. Though the man insisted he cleaned his chimney, an investigator believed that materials within the flue ignited due to a lack of clearance between the chimney and home’s combustible parts.
It is recommended by fire officials that woodstove and fireplace chimneys be professionally cleaned at least once per year. The man received assistance from American Red Cross. His home was uninsured.
