Solar panel installer electrocuted while installing panels
In Singapore, a roofing contractor was electrocuted while installing solar panels on a building’s roof.
On 12 June, just three days before the Tanjong Pagar building collapsed, another roofing contractor was killed.
So far this year, Singapore has had 14 workplace deaths, including these two recent incidents.
A worker installing solar panels touched an exposed cable
The Straits Times (ST) reports that the worker was installing solar panels on a building’s rooftop on 12 June.
During his work, he noticed an exposed cable that was “arcing and emitting smoke”.
Somehow, he came into contact with the cable and was electrocuted.
That same day, the worker died of his injuries after being taken to the hospital.
The cable was lying on a wet roof
Lianhe Zaobao reported that preliminary investigations revealed that the cable was lying on a wet rooftop. The roof was allegedly wet from rain before the incident.
Electrocution is also a major hazard during solar panel installation, according to WSH.
Even without a power source, panels exposed to sunlight can generate electricity.
Accordingly, the council recommends that companies take precautionary measures such as insulating exposed electrical components and ceasing electrical work when it rains.
Additionally, contractors must have a plan to prevent falls from heights.

ST noted that Singapore has recorded 14 workplace deaths so far in 2023.
Despite being far from last year’s 46, the number is still alarming.
