Nick Fletcher, Don Valley’s MP, announced on Tuesday that in a letter to Therese Coffley, Secretary of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, he requested that flood-affected households be compensated.
Storm Babet, which caused flooding in Doncaster last month, damaged 15 homes.
The government has a scheme that allows households to be compensated for damage caused by flooding, provided there are more than 25 homes in the affected area.
Mr Fletcher stated: “Doncaster has been a city which has suffered from floods over the years.
Since my election in 2019, I’ve worked with Environment Agency and City of Doncaster Council closely to prevent the damages caused by floods of 2019.
The flooding in Doncaster was very minimal and the Environment Agency, City of Doncaster Council and their successful efforts deserve a lot of credit.
15 properties in Doncaster were affected by flooding, not as many as previously.
The total number of properties that were flooded was less than 25. It’s not right. The good work done by City of Doncaster Council and the Environment Agency is penalised to my constituents.
I have written Therese to request that she take any action necessary to correct this injustice.
The council has improved the Flood Risk Management Plan last month to make the region “resilient”.
