Brixton’s residents have been urged to shut their windows because of the huge amount of smoke visible.
South London has been hit with a massive fire this morning in the very early hours (Friday 8 September). The fire has been brought under control by 100 firefighters, despite the fact that the building is partially collapsed.
Firefighters report that Herne Hill’s entire waste transfer station was on fire. The fire brigade has removed 12 gas tanks as a preventative measure, as certain cylinders could explode when heat is applied.
A large quantity of smoke is coming out from the Shakespeare Road forest fire. Residents should keep their window closed.
Closed roads are in effect.
The fires will be tackled from a height using two turntable ladders measuring 32 metres.
London Fire Brigade received a call at 2.09am.
Paul Sadler (the Station Commander) who is on scene said: “Crews have made steady progress with the fire in Shakespeare Road. The crews at the scene will stay all day, as the fire is likely to continue for a while.
While crews attempt to contain the blaze, local residents are urged not to open their windows or doors.
The area is closed due to road construction.
