Residents and officials in the county are now assessing damage after Monday’s storm that knocked down trees and cut off power.
A strong storm hit York County on Monday afternoon.
JoAnn Badders, her husband and their porch were watching the wind as it picked up in Fawn Township.
Badder described the sound as a woosh. It’s an eerie sound that you will never forget. “I was so scared.”
The driveway of the house was quickly covered with fallen trees.
A section of tree branch that broke the car’s windshield shaved a large portion of the back of their motorhome.
As the couple cleared debris, crews from an electrical company repaired lines that had been damaged by trees.
Catherine Sturla is among the thousands of people still living without electricity.
Winds in East Hopewell Township knocked a transformer out near her house and sheared a pole off.
Sturla stated, “They asked me to go stay at a hotel.” I went to the Hampton Hotel in Shrewsbury, but it was without electricity.
The situation is much worse than in the backyard.
One of the pine trees fell into her home.
Sturla stated, “I have never seen anything so bad.” I can’t imagine what it would look like after cleaning up.
Documentation of damage is done by the York County Emergency Management Department to qualify for disaster assistance.
Ted Czech is the public information officer for York County Emergency Management. “We communicate with federal governments to see if there’s a threshold that we could reach and get help.”
Bill Anderson may be the most pressing need.
The roof of his car repair shop was torn off by the wind.
He said that “part of the roof is halfway on Route 24 while the rest was in the field next door.”
The heavy rains that followed soaked some of his tools, leaving wet insulation and puddles all around the store.
Anderson’s business is the source of his income.
“I am not afraid.” “I’m still shocked at what happened yesterday but we will rebuild,” Anderson stated.
Tornado activity is still possible in some places, but the majority of damage has been caused by straight-line wind speeds between 70 and 85 mph.
