The fire that occurred Monday morning at South Ogden Junior High caused damage in a boys’ bathroom. This was primarily due to the sprinkler system. Students were released early because of this.
South Ogden Fire Department released a press release that stated, “It is suspected that one or more students set the towel dispenser on fire.” The Weber District and the Fire Department are working together to find out who is responsible. They could be facing criminal charges or disciplinary actions at school.
According to South Ogden fire chief Cameron West, the damage was mostly limited to the bathrooms, although some sprinkler water seeped in to an adjacent hall.
Firefighters arrived to find a hand towel dispenser on the fire. The sprinklers were able to control the flames, and firefighters responded quickly. At 11:13 am, the call was made and the students were released from school.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Weber School district spokesman Lane Findlay stated that officials had considered it possible the fire was caused by a social media challenge for students. We’ve thought about it. He said, “I’m unaware that anything similar is happening.”
The school will be back to normal classes on Tuesday, he said.
